Critter

After nearly a month of playing housewife and taking it real easy, I thought I'd start a new project. Well, maybe that's too big a word for it. The local art gallery is having an auction next week to raise money, so I made something to contribute. It had been a while since I had pulled out the ol' papier-mache, and I missed it.

After a trip to Home Despot to get wallpaper paste (way better than flour, doncha know), and to Michaels where I managed to find the only pair of non-googly eyes in the whole store, I was ready. I sadly neglected to take any photos of the guy when he was just wire and newspaper, but here he is newly mache-d:

Then the important gesso coat came next:

And finally, after trying out a mustard yellow color and rejecting it, I settled on bright blue, fading to greenish on the feet and a bright orange-tipped tail. Luckily I found some old shiny varnish in my long-neglected art box and was able to give him a glistening coat:

Much as I like art entwined with ideas, it was really fun to just make something because I thought it would look cool. You can also see him on the gallery's online auction page here. It's a small start, but I see bigger projects up ahead.
